The Helm's Man Delivery 60s

Cindy, United States, Fresh Baked Goods Delivery in the 60's

I remember the Helm's Man who would deliver fresh baked goods to our neighborhood in the morning. He would park his truck, which looked kind of like a hearse, and open the back doors offering the most delicious smells of donuts and breads imaginable. My mom would buy my brother and me a fresh glazed donut. In those days we could buy treats from the local peddlers as they came through our middle class neighborhood with ice cream or baked goods.

  7. I grew up in the El Sereno area of Los Angeles. Our Helms Man was Gilbert Runningtree. Gil was awesome. The children in our neighberhood thought we were "all that" because we had"accounts" with the Helms Man. At the end of the week or month our Mom's would settle the bill. I was so disappointed when the Helms Bakery went the way of the Good Humor Man.

  8. I have very fond memories of waiting for the Helms man in the 60s in Southern California. My mom always purchased bread from him, and occasionally we would get one of those awesome glazed doughnuts. I, too, remember the long slide out trays that displayed the tempting treats!! I also have asked people if they remembered the Helms man and they don't so this was great to read.
